Our Pets: God's Greatest Companions

Loving and caring for an animal is one of the most precious life experiences  we can ever have. They provide a companionship that compares to no other. They are truly some of God's most beloved companions. On June 4, 2014, I finally had to lay my precious baby (my cat, Tigger) to rest as a result of terminal kidney failure.

He had a great life, a home where he was always loved (spoiled rotten in fact) and the security of knowing he was never alone. I celebrate his life and the joy and comfort he gave me. I'm so grateful for the gift the Lord gave me in him. All great gifts come from Jesus and it brings me peace to know that my Tigger has now returned to his Creator, yours and mine. I was truly blessed to have Tigger on this earth for 18 years.

It's funny what happens when you believe you're not ready for something new. I can tell you, that after Tigger, I couldn't even think about the possibility of adopting another cat so soon. Well, that all changed in August of 2014 only 2 months after Tigger went home.

Where I was living at the time, a small, orange tabby, similar to Tigger, with medium-lengthed fur entered the neighborhood apparently out of nowhere. The other cats on the block seemed to sense that this cat was tired and weak and provided companionship and protection for him. It was really amazing to watch. My friend was the first to notice him and told me to come and see.  Honestly, when I looked at this cat, it was so heartbreaking. He looked so thin and frail. He was also constantly scratching and biting himself which caused him to bleed.

My friend and I weren't sure what happened to him but we knew he needed help or there was a good chance that he would die soon. We started to spend time with him and then slowly but surely he started coming into the house where he could have more devoted human contact. We gave him food, a litter box and plenty of love. The next thing that happened is absolutely incredible: the sores he had from scratching himself seemed to heal almost immediately. Finally, we took him to the vet to have him examined, tested and given a medication bath for his irritated skin.

The vet said the cat was in great shape. He also prescribed antibiotics for a brief time to kill any remaining bacteria in the cat's system. To the joy of my friend and I, the cat did not have any known previous owner as he had no collar or identification chip. That was when we knew we were truly meant to take care of this cat. It's really like he was sent to us by the Lord. His name is Leo (which in Latin means 'Lion'). Leo has been such a blessing. Not only was I given the opportunity to care for another animal but the Lord has used Leo to comfort and heal my grief from having to release Tigger back to Him.

The Lord let's us know in so many ways how much He loves and cares for us. He knows our pain and He knows how to bind up our wounds and heal our broken hearts. The next time you question the closeness of Jesus, look into the precious face of an animal and see that He really does never leave us nor forsake us.

Bless the beasts and the children
For in this world they have no voice
They have no choice

Bless the beasts and the children
For the world can never be
The world they see

Light their way
When the darkness surrounds them
Give them love
Let it shine all around them

Bless the beasts and the children
Give them shelter from the storm
Keep them safe
Keep them warm
